The Magnetic heatbed enables you to use flexible, removable steel sheets. There are different properties and strengths of each sheet, but they also have different thickness which affects calibration.

For more details on the different flexible steel sheet and their properties, please see Flexible steel sheets (guidepost).

We implemented steel sheet profiles for our printers that need first-layer calibration. The function allows you to create up to eight specialized profiles for your printer setup.

For each sheet, set the Live Z adjust value. Once the values for each sheet are stored on the printer, it is possible to quickly toggle bewteen sheet profiles. The printer will not remind you to change the steel sheet profile, as it cannot sense which steel sheet is installed

How it works (MK2.5/S & MK3/S/+)

There are currently eight sheet profiles available with predefined, but customizable names.

To set up the individual sheet profiles, please head to the LCD Menu -> Settings -> HW setup -> Steel Sheets:

hw setup profiles

For each sheet, the following settings are available:

  • Select - confirms the selection of the sheet, which will then become the default
  • First layer calibration - starts the First Layer Calibration (i3) process for the given profile
  • Rename - enables you to change the name, by up to seven characters
  • Reset - sets the values back to the factory defaults

Quick-toggle

As soon as two or more profiles are configured (by the First Layer Calibration), you will be able to quick-toggle between them directly from the main menu.

hw profile 2

Don't forget which profile you have attributed to which plate! Always carefully watch your first layer and in case the nozzle is too high or too low, stop the print and fix it either by setting the correct profile or by modifying the Live adjust Z.

Renaming of the sheet

After selecting the Rename option in the sheet profile menu, you can change up to 7 characters of the profile name. The word "Sheet" cannot be changed; it is the "Smooth1", "Textur1" etc. that you can customize. There is no way to delete or erase a wrongly selected character, but you can always restart the renaming procedure.

You start from the left and move to the right. By turning the knob, you are changing the characters, and by clicking it, you confirm the current character and move to the next one. When a character position is redefined, a small chevron mark will appear underneath it.

How it works (MINI/+, MK3.5/S)

To set up the individual sheet profiles, please head to the LCD Menu -> Settings -> Hardware -> Steel Sheets.

For each sheet, the following settings are available:

  • Select - confirms the selection of the sheet, which will then become the default
  • First layer calibration - starts the First Layer Calibration process for the given profile
  • Reset - sets the values back to the factory defaults
  • Offset - sets the Live Z adjust value for the given profile, without calibration

Screenshots taken on the MK3.5. The same settings are available on the MINI/+.

Quick-toggle

As soon as two or more profiles are configured by the First Layer Calibration, you will be able to quick-toggle between them directly from the Control menu. The quick toggle is available in LCD menu ->Control ->Sheet profile

Screenshot taken on the MK3.5. The same toggle is available on the MINI/+.

Is there an equivalent of this page for the 32bit printers yet?

This option is not needed on the new 32 bit machines, like XL and MK4, as they use the load cell, so they don't have to remember steel sheet profiles anymore.

I just set up the textured sheet. Now I am not sure of the starting point. So what is the default starting profile? is it smooth 1 or do I have to do this with that profile to get it back to printing good on that sheet?

After saving a new sheet, the printer will start with what you used last. You can see all your saved profiles in the quick toggle. If the sheet profile you were using before is not there, you will need to save it again.

I just completed my MK3S+ to MK3.5 upgrade. I noticed that with the new interface, I cannot seem to rename the sheets. i.e. I have the Satin sheet on Custom1 but I would like to rename it to Satin1 like I could on the MK3S+. Can this be done? The sheet confirmation is not as obvious as it was on the MK3S+ as well. The sheet selection does not show up anywhere on the main LCD screen like it did on the MK3S+. I have to navigate into Control to see what sheet profile is currently selected. It might be nice to add this as a footer option?

This is a feature that needs to be implemented on the Prusa XL ASAP. Out of the box, nothing will even remotely adhere to the textured steel sheet, and it's obvious that the nozzle is way too far away when the print starts. Switch to the satin sheet, and boom, good adhesion (at least with PLA).
As others on this forum have commented, the textured sheet requires the nozzle to be much closer to the bed for good adhesion. Given the load-cell bed leveling, it shouldn't be difficult to implement some basic preset profiles for each different type of sheet, which can then be fine-tuned if necessary.
A simple option in the settings menu to let you select the type of sheet currently installed on the printer would save so much headache...

Change steel sheet profile without LCD-display
We want to change the steel sheet profile without using the LCD-display. The LCD display is inaccessible to blind and visually impaired people. Unfortunately, blind and visually impaired people cannot adjust the steel sheet profiles via octoprint or via PrusaSlicer. We use Prusa i3 MK2.5S, Prusa i3 MK3S and Prusa MINI with octoprint and PrusaSlicer without using the LCD-display.
Please suggest a solution how we can select a steel sheet profile without using the LCD-display.

It is possible to do it through the G-code, you can see more about it here: https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware/pull/2201. Note that this G-code is only supported from firmware 3.13.0.
