This chapter will guide you through calibrating and preparing the printer for its first run. Starting with tensioning the belts:

⬢The right screw adjusts the lower belt.
⬢Double-check that the M3x30 screws in the belt tensioners were lubricated during assembly.

This is a fiddly exercise. I didn't initially understand what's important here, so let me give you a hand so you have it easier than I did: read both the instructions on gantry alignment and belt tensioning before proceeding. Try to get the gantry alignment as perfect as possible, or you'll run into calibration and/or printing problems later. Then proceed with belt tensioning. Don't be discouraged if you have to redo these two steps on your first attempt.
Step 1: Gantry alignment. This means getting the gantry straight. Check for play, and if you find any, twist the gantry by pushing/pulling it, then repeat until it's straight.
There's a catch, though: the belts pull on the gantry and can pull it out of alignment. During belt tensioning, you tension both belts by exactly the same amount to keep the gantry straight. But since it isn't straight yet at this point, if one belt ends up more engaged than the other after assembly, lightly tightening or loosening one of them can help the gantry straighten itself out.
Step 2: Belt tensioning. Use the phone app, pluck a belt and let the phone record the frequency response. Since the gantry is now straight, tension or loosen both belts by exactly the same amount. Don't spend too much time on this: just pluck the belts, get them to resonate somewhere in the 75–115 Hz range, and leave them there. Once the printer is running, there's another calibration phase for the belts, and tensioning becomes much easier then, since the belt's frequency response is easy to see visually and the machine gives you exact instructions on how far to turn the screws.
If, once the printer runs, you get calibration errors on the X/Y axes, you might need to start over with step 1...
